Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. [1][2The Russell was born to black parents and a white mother, is biracial, and grew up with her mother's side of the family. Her skin shade made her feel different in her youth. The family struggled with financial issues. They were constantly moving and moved 16 times in order to fund her father's job. Russell spoke out about how despite this, Russell said that she had always been creatively inclined when she was a kid. She hoped to be a dancer, and later to be an artist. It was when she was 18 that she began her first acting class. She used her earnings from work to purchase a vehicle and would then drive to Los Angeles, to audition. When her money ran out, she would return home to work until she was able to earn enough to audition again. The process went on for four years, and it took until she landed her first major television role.
